Ben carried a bright kite to the town field.

He planned a great flight before dinner.

Soft sun warmed the short grass under his shoes.

A steady breeze touched the thin fabric.

The kite rose quickly, and its long wind-tail rippled.

Ben smiled and walked backward across the field.

A small cloud drifted above the trees.

He hopped once, lifting both heels from the grass.

Suddenly, darker clouds gathered, and the wind changed direction.

The kite pulled harder, tugging Ben toward a wooden bench.

The string looped the bench arm, causing a quick snarl.

A storm cloud rolled slowly over the low hill.

Thin drops of rain tapped Ben’s jacket sleeves.

He ducked, then guided the line gently around the arm.

The knot loosened, but the kite dipped near a low branch.

Its wind-tail brushed the leaves and shook one loose apple.

The apple bounced beside Ben, startling two pigeons into flight.

With one final pull, the kite glided down safely.

He folded the damp fabric and placed it in his bag.

The field quieted; only light rain fell on the grass.
