Planks After the Storm-

English 원문
Mara steadied a dented lantern while her brother Theo pushed aside a dangling chain at the gate. The ruined shipyard spread ahead, smelling of wet rope, rusted nails, and yesterday’s seawater. Spring tides had already pulled loose cables across the mud, leaving gray loops that glimmered under the lantern. Most roof sheets had been torn away during the last gale, revealing skeletal beams against half-lit clouds. They had come to salvage planks for a small dock behind their cottage before the next high tide. A storm-battered hull leaned near the pier, and its ribs creaked whenever swirling winds rushed through the shattered doorway. Fingers numb, Mara pressed the first plank while Theo wedged a crowbar beneath the splintered seam.
The plank refused to lift; swollen wood clung to rusted bolts, and the metal groaned louder with every pull. Theo fetched a length of rope, looped it around the board, and both siblings leaned back, heels sliding on wet gravel. The rope snapped, slapping the plank and sending Mara stumbling against a toppled barrel. Inside the barrel, seawater sloshed aside and revealed a stunned lobster waving one claw like a miniature signal flag. If the rope had snapped again, their work would have ended for the day, yet the unexpected passenger changed their rhythm. Theo lifted the creature gently, carried it to a nearby tide pool, and watched bubbles rise once it disappeared between stones. Laughter bounced off empty sheds, and togetherness settled more firmly than any nail they had planned to drive.
After several bruising tugs, the bolts loosened, and the plank shifted when they balanced crowbar, rope, and body weight together. Two more boards yielded under the same rhythm, forming a tidy pile beside the lantern while clouds thinned overhead. The siblings lashed the planks into a rough sled, then dragged the load across the yard’s broken tracks toward the waiting cart. Wind dropped for the first time, allowing the lantern flame to stand upright rather than dance in restless arcs. Wet boots squeaked, ropes creaked, and the cracked yard gate closed behind them without another protest. The repaired platform stood above the tide, and the empty crate rested beside the quiet boat.
