Sheep peacefully bask under golden sunlight that broke through low mist, and the entire field offered the exact pastoral scene she had sketched in her notebook the night before. She had brought tubes of ochre and amber, certain they would match the golden hue spreading across the hillside. When the clock chimed from a distant church, she clicked the stopwatch hanging around her neck; by noon, she hoped the painting would stand finished.

The first obstacle arrived faster than paint could dry. A wandering lamb brushed the easel, and her opening lines blurred. Her first sketch had been ruined by an unexpected gust that threw grit against the wet surface; even the palette was speckled. Maeve wiped the board, shifted three steps uphill, and started again. Then the sun slid behind a large cloud; the clearing dimmed, and contrast vanished. If she had carried stronger lamps, the loss would have mattered less. She adjusted by narrowing her frame to the tree line, yet needles shimmered too dark on canvas. Resistance kept piling like stubborn layers of paint.

A sudden break in the cloud sent a brighter shaft across the grass, but another surprise followed. A young deer stepped from the forest, paused on the very spot she had painted empty, and dipped its muzzle toward the pond. If the cloud had not shifted, she would have missed the sudden visitor altogether. Maeve waited; ripples spread, caught the returning golden sunlight, and wrapped the deer in a luminous outline.
