Milo left the old suburban station and followed a narrow footpath that once hugged busy rails. Years of disuse had allowed saplings to spring up around every silent signal, weaving metal and wood into a living thicket locals called the signal-grown forest. Light flickered through clustered leaves, and distant traffic murmured like a low drum. Milo carried a folded sketchpad and a pencil tin; a crumpled brochure showing the observation tower pressed against his back pocket, forgotten while he walked. He hoped to capture migrating swifts on paper before evening clouds thickened. Occasionally a cyclist coasted past, wheels crackling over gravel, but most of the path stayed hushed, giving birdcalls space to layer over one another.
The tower’s spiral stairs began just beyond a mesh gate hanging from one hinge. Milo placed one foot on the lowest grate; rust answered with a soft groan. Halfway upward, his boot slid on a patch of damp pollen, and his elbow bumped the rail, sending graphite sticks rattling inside the tin. He paused, shifted his weight, then resumed, slower this time. From an open landing he noticed rooftops peeking above the canopy, chimneys puffing occasional ribbons of white. The signal-grown forest below looked like a quilt stitched from countless greens. Wind brushed his cheeks; stronger currents swirled above the trees, ready to carry the swifts. Another short climb delivered him to the round deck—an unobstructed vantage point held aloft by iron ribs and stubborn bolts.
Milo propped the sketchpad against the guardrail and scanned the sky. A scattered formation of swifts soon streaked past, wings scything the air, yet his pencil touched paper only briefly before a different shape broke the pattern. From beyond a northern ridge, a hot-air balloon glided into view, its envelope painted with vibrant chevrons that shifted as sunlight glanced across sewn fabric. The unexpected visitor altered the scene: birds arced wide, a pair of hikers on a distant slope pointed upward, and even the tower’s railing trembled faintly as wind eddied behind the canvas giant. Milo traced balloon lines instead of birds, pages fluttering until the formation drifted southward. The balloon’s striped envelope hung above the treetops and rested against the blue afternoon sky.
