English 원문
Milo crossed the cobblestones at noon, weaving between wicker stalls and painters who lined the square. The clock tower dominated the quaint surroundings, its bells idle for the moment, its shadow touching baskets of cherries and jars of paint. He carried a slim tripod; his local goal was a single crisp photograph of the tower’s ancient orrery, scheduled to spin during the hourly chime. Pigeons shifted along a balustrade, wings flicking bits of straw that floated down like slow snow.
He set the tripod near a cast-iron railing just as the caretaker unlocked a small hatch in the tower base. Inside, brass planets waited on delicate arms. A glass sphere, sealed in vacuum, held a gyroscope at the center, and the sunlight glinted on its mirrored edge. Above the hatch, an imposing figure in bronze—an explorer with a raised sextant—loomed over onlookers, its green-black patina suggesting endless vigilance. Milo adjusted his lens; behind him, the crowd’s hum thickened, then dipped as the first gear clicked.
The planets began to whirl, tracing elegant loops until a faint scrape broke the rhythm. One arm drifted out of line, and the model moons entered an unstable orbital resonance; tiny rings trembled, clinking like teaspoons. Milo crouched for a better angle, but his camera strap snagged on the railing’s scrollwork and yanked the body sideways. He grabbed it, elbows knocking the tripod and sending a brief shiver through his frame. Metal shrieked above; the caretaker’s hand froze mid-wind. For a heartbeat the mechanism struggled, gears overlapping in shifting spatial dimensions that the eye could barely follow. Gasps slipped through the square, air thinning as if the whole scene had been drawn into the gyroscope’s hushed center.
With a final metallic pop the misaligned arm settled back; the orrery slowed, then found a steady cadence. Milo steadied the tripod, thumbed the shutter twice, and captured the moment when late light brushed the statue’s stern brow. People exhaled, sleeves stirred, and the square returned to its warmer pace. Dust motes drifted as the bronze statue stood silent beneath the settling gears.
