Sunlight warmed the quiet countryside road near the fairground.

Mia carried a small velvet sack with silver coins.

She wanted to watch the travelling magician before supper.

The fair stood beyond a line of old elm trees.

A narrow wooden bridge crossed a pond along her route.

Halfway over, a tall white swan stepped onto the planks.

Its wings spread wide and blocked the path.

Water splashed when the bird tapped a loose board.

The board flipped up and knocked Mia's sack from her palm.

Coins rolled between gaps and clinked into the pond.

A loud quack burst nearby as three ducks rushed forward.

The sound startled the swan; it slipped back into water.

Ripples drifted the coins toward shallow mud near the bank.

Mia knelt quickly and gathered every wet coin again.

The broken board now lay flat across the gap.

She walked over it and reached the bright tent on grass.

Mia pushed the flap and stepped in.
