Carla crouched at the edge of the wooden pier while emerging dawn brushed pale gold across the water. Beside her lay a hand-sized sailboat, built overnight from driftwood strips and cotton thread. The blueprint had been drawn on crumpled notebook paper, and every plank had been measured with quiet patience. Carla hoped to show classmates a small craft could travel farther than their heavy plastic toys. She steadied the boat, her unwavering hands gripping the thin mast. Glistening waves lapped against barnacled beams below, promising both lift and risk.

At first launch, a sudden side wind spun the vessel, driving its bow into the pier post. Carla hauled the wet hull back, paused to strategize, then angled the tiny rudder two millimeters left. The rudder had been carved from an old spoon, yet the metal bent under her second push. If the knot had loosened earlier, she would have saved precious minutes against the rising tide. No plan felt guaranteed, yet her shoulders stayed level like boards nailed to the pier rail.

On the third attempt, a higher swell lifted the craft, then set it down beyond the slippery piling. The swell also rolled a slender glass bottle toward her boots, its cork rattling against the wood. Inside, a smooth stone flickered like a pocket lighthouse, and an idea formed as quickly as the sparkle. Carla slipped the glowing pebble into the hollow stern, adding weight that balanced the bow against the wind. This adjustment let the boat slide forward in a steady line, clearing each crest without another spin. The small sailboat rested beyond the glistening waves, its white triangle mast steady against widening light.
