A Tuesday morning sun slanted across the school auditorium, catching dust above rows of folding chairs. Lucas hurried in with a tablet under one arm and a shoebox full of tiny painted planets. He had spent the weekend coding a moving star map, and the science committee had already approved his slot. At the back of the stage, a projector stood on a trolley, its lens capped. A handwritten note lay beside it, stamped and countersigned, evidence that bureaucracy had already passed through the space. Lucas crouched beside the trolley, lifted the cap, and firmly pressed the power button. For several long seconds, nothing on the projector changed, and the silent lens stared back at him.
While he carefully traced the cable, muffled voices rose near the curtain. Two teachers held an impromptu debate about chair placement, their arms drawing wide circles that blocked his path. He waited, shifting from foot to foot, but the argument slid sideways into measurements and tape. The screen remained blank, and the first bell echoed through the hall. Lucas had planned to propose an interactive sky tour once the image appeared.
After the bell faded, Lucas tried a new tactic inside the echoing auditorium. If he had known the trolley’s plug had been disconnected earlier, he would have carried his own extension cord. Instead, a forgotten overhead mirror caught his eye near a pile of music stands. He propped the mirror on a stand and tilted it toward the ceiling lights. Then he carefully angled the shoebox planets so the reflected glow washed over them in gentle circles. Several minutes later the committee entered through the side door, clipboards tapping rhythmically against steady hips. The projector remained silent, yet swirling colors danced across the ceiling because the mirror scattered light through translucent planets. The presentation had been reshaped rather than cancelled, and whispered surprise replaced the earlier chair-counting debate. When the bell rang again, the shoebox rested on the stand, its small spheres turning slowly in the mirrored beam.
