Early afternoon painted the town square in pale gold, and rows of stalls rose like bright shells around the fountain. Ravi arrived with a coil of paper lanterns looped over one shoulder. Each lantern carried specks of color that glimmered when dust motes crossed their surface, tiny reminders of a vast universe spun far beyond the rooftops. Two volunteers in blue vests patrolled the perimeter; their calm pacing served as quiet peacekeeping rather than command. A watchful eye also lingered high above—an old clock tower whose iron hands ticked at a patient pace, surveying everything below without urgency.

Ravi’s task looked simple: stretch the strand from one lamppost to the next so evening shoppers could stroll beneath the glow. He lifted the first hook, but a slip of his thumb made the metal scrape and drop. The cable sagged against the stone path, scattering petals from a nearby bucket of tulips. A florist crouched, gathered the flowers, and offered the bucket closer so Ravi could reach the post without stepping on stems. Their movements meshed with practical cohesion; petals slid back into place while the cable rose again. The exchange proved mutually beneficial—flowers stayed clean, and Ravi gained the angle he needed.

Halfway across the square, a sudden gust rolled between the stalls. The lantern strand billowed like a sail, yanked free of Ravi’s grip, and smacked the water in the fountain. Ripples slapped marble; startled carp darted beneath lily pads. Ravi lunged, sleeves darkening as he caught the wet cord. For a moment the entire square shifted: vendors paused, plastic flags rattled, a child’s marble clattered off a table, chased the slope, and plopped into the fountain beside the lanterns. The marble’s faint click against stone broke the stillness, and hands from three directions reached in. A baker steadied the cord, the child fished for the marble, and the florist twisted a loose knot back into alignment. Water dripped, voices resumed, and the breeze slid onward, leaving the lanterns secured.

Dusk moved quickly once the wind calmed. Ravi checked each knot, wiped stray droplets, and stepped back while the first bulbs blinked alive behind rice paper. Vendors lit cookers, the baker placed warm rolls under glass, and the peacekeeping pair drifted near the fountain, now satisfied with the restored order. Lantern light pooled over the quiet benches.
