English 원문
Milo waited at the rope line in the small town gallery, clutching a fresh sketchbook. His art teacher had assigned every student a single painting to study from life, and Milo's choice hung before him. Family oral history had always claimed that the portrait of Queen Celeste contained a secret missed by casual visitors. He hoped to catch it today, for last week glare on the varnish had forced him to leave with blank pages. Light spilled through the skylight, but reflections chased each fresh angle he tried. Each time he stepped left, the glare followed; each time he stepped right, a tour group crowded the space.
After the group finally drifted onward, Milo crouched low beside the velvet rope. He aligned his pencil with the painting’s vanishing point at the queen’s shoulder. From that perspective he noticed a faint shimmer just above the painted hair. The canvas had been cleaned by a skilled conservator ten years earlier. Even so, a thin layer of old lacquer still masked delicate strokes. Portrait preservation used solvents, and the varnish bent light like water over pebbles. Milo rose and shifted a step until the reflection slipped aside; hidden lines sharpened into a silver tiara. If the queen had tilted her head lower, the ornament would have vanished behind shadow. Without that glimpse, no careful sketch could ever have proved the persistent rumor. Milo dashed graphite across the page, recording curve after curve before glare returned. He closed the book only when the rope shuddered and fresh footsteps crowded the floorboards.
Milo stepped into the stone courtyard, slowly flipping through his quick sketch. Columns of afternoon light cut across the page, and the penciled crown glimmered where graphite caught the sun. He wished he had brought colored pencils; still, the crisp outline would hold until he returned to the studio. Beside the fountain he slid the sketchbook into his bag, letting the discovery simmer like tea in a sealed cup. Shadows from the fountain grille slowly settled over the closed canvas bag.
