A travelling carnival had spread bright tents along the coastline, and music rolled over the evening sand. Maya carried a slim sketchbook; her goal was simple: capture the sunset before its colours faded. She has chosen a flat rock near the water, yet the path that led there was blocked. Visitors drifted between stalls, and a painted wagon from the menagerie rattled past, wheels spraying shells. When a drumbeat echoed from the central arena, the crowd pressed closer, turning the open path into a shifting maze. Meanwhile, the tide kept advancing, swallowing the lower stones. Maya shifted her weight from foot to foot, watching the bright horizon slip behind moving backs and fluttering flags.

She tried to wait, but another wave kissed her shoes. A sudden idea flickered. A lifeguard tower, which had been closed for the day, stood three rows behind the popcorn stand. Its ladder was narrow, yet no sign forbid use. Maya stepped onto the first rung; sand dropped from her soles. Wind tugged her hair as she climbed. From the platform, she gained a clear, elevated line of sight. Right then, fireworks for the celebration burst without warning, scattering red sparks across a violet sky. The surprise glare lit the clouds and the sea at once. Maya opened her book quickly, pencil racing while colours shifted overhead. When the final spark dimmed, her page held the glowing shore.
