English 원문
Theo folded the creaking ladder and stepped onto the school’s flat roof, a space shared with the small laboratory greenhouse. He had spent three weeks wiring tiny cameras around a barrel filled with fallen leaves and fruit scraps. The plan was to film the slow transformation of the mixture into soil for the science fair. Dew dotted the railing and made it sparkle like bright scattered stars. A thin moon still hung above the city, and a faint sour aroma rose from the compost, pushing against the cool air.
He slid the greenhouse panel sideways; the track jammed halfway and metal scraped against glass. Elbow pressure freed it, yet the sudden jolt shook the tripod, and the camera tilted toward the ceiling. After righting it, he checked power levels; the main unit had been drained by last night’s wind-triggered recordings. If he had charged it earlier, the delay would have been shorter. He pulled a spare pack from his pocket, but the connector slipped into a narrow gap between planks. While he crouched to recover it, a flock of pigeons burst from a nearby ledge, wings clapping in the still air. Soft feathers drifted onto the lens, quietly blocking almost half the framed view.
Theo wiped the glass, pushed the battery into place, and pressed record again. Warm vapor now drifted from the compost; the rising heat had been produced by unseen microbes. The mist caught the first orange rays of dawn, and something new appeared inside it. Dozens of tiny butterflies hovered above the barrel, their wings opening in slow, bright transcendence against the pale steam. The camera, finally steady, captured the sudden, swirling color storm without complaint. His experiment had been planned around decay, yet dancing life took the main stage. He wished he had positioned a wider lens, but the sequence continued while he watched. Soft gold light rested over the quiet compost heap at the center of the roof.
