English 원문
Marta reached the wooden footbridge while the sky still guarded its final stars. Below her, the estuary revealed wide bands of mud where the water had slid back toward the open sea. She knelt, lifted a handheld sensor, and aimed its beam toward a pale patch glimmering several steps ahead. The reading hinted at carbon dioxide ice—rare at sea level, possible only under an odd collision of winter chill and a wandering jet stream that had cooled the coast overnight. Her glove tapped the side pocket; spare batteries rattled, ready for a quick change.
A narrow plank path led from the bridge to the flats. Marta stepped off, and her boot sank deeper than expected. The mud behaved like a quagmire, sucking at the leather with a wet gasp. She leaned forward, braced a palm against the plank, and pulled hard; the boot refused, then released with a slurp that splattered her trouser leg. Cold liquid crept inside the seam. Wind rushed over the reeds, tilting them east, and she had to draw on every scrap of balance to stay upright. Another step planted her weight on a hidden root, but it shifted and rolled. Marta toppled, elbow first, into a shallow puddle, and her sensor skidded beyond her reach, its screen blinking yellow.
She crawled after the device, fingers stinging in the water. When her hand closed around the casing, she noticed that the puddle’s base gleamed white, not brown. Her fall had scraped away the top layer of sludge, uncovering a thin shelf of carbon dioxide ice lying under the mud itself. The surprise rewrote her plan: the original patch she had targeted was smaller, yet here stretched a broader, concealed sheet waiting for measurement. She set the sensor flat, wiped the screen with a soaked sleeve, and started a new scan while the tide murmured farther out. Above the estuary, wind arrows traced restless curves across the clouds, and a fresh crust of carbon dioxide ice rested beside her boots.
