Sofia has planned a quick honey glaze for the muffins cooling on the counter. The kitchen still holds the gentle warmth from the oven that clicked off minutes ago. A sudden buzz rises above the spoons; a single bee darts around the hanging lamp, lifted by the attractive smell. Its path wobbles dangerously close to the shiny bowl that sits beside her elbow. One bowl has been left near the sink, and a wet cloth blocks the direct route to the window. The tiny visitor keeps circling, which turns the simple task into a small race against time.

She tries gentle waves with a wooden spoon, but the insect only dips lower. A plastic booster seat that usually waits for her nephew stands under the table. She drags it closer, climbs quickly, and pushes the high latch of the narrow window. Cool air slides in; the bee finds the opening and slips outside. The sudden breeze tilts the honey jar, and a ribbon of gold threatens to spill. She steadies it just in time and adds the last spoonful to the mixture.
