Lily walked along the bright sand beside the ocean. She carried a small sketchbook and colored pencils. Her goal was simple: draw interesting shapes from tide pools. A shallow pool glimmered near dark rocks ahead. Inside it, a slim newt slid between green weeds. A curious pattern of spots covered the newt's smooth skin. Lily bent lower, resting one knee on a rock. Her knee pressed a loose stone beside the pool. The stone rolled downward and struck a larger shell. The shell bounced, splashing water toward a resting duck.

Startled, the duck flapped hard and knocked a nearby nest. One smooth egg slipped from straw and began to slide. It rolled straight toward the edge of the pool. Lily gasped, reached forward, and caught the egg gently. Water dripped from her sleeve onto the sketchbook pages. She placed the egg back, then lifted the wet book. Sunlight warmed a flat rock near her sandy shoes. She laid the sketchbook open on that bright surface. Lily turned toward the pool and restarted her drawing. Soft waves rustled behind as she closed the sketchbook.
