She swung hard and felt light contact. The ball skipped over the grass toward the fence. Cheering started as the score now favored Mila’s team.

Sudden movement quickly broke the rhythm. A neighbor’s puppy darted in and grabbed the ball. It bolted around second base while everyone chased and laughed. The line of feet shook loose dirt near the rose bed. Dust floated toward the visiting umpire, Uncle Ray, who sneezed loudly. The dog finally dropped the ball beside the garden hose. Mila scooped it and sprinted toward home plate again. The others tripped, slipped, and slowed on the loose soil. She slid over the white chalk just before a tag. Grass stains covered her jeans, and loud cheers marked her victory. She brushed dust from her knees.
