English 원문
Kai stepped out of the bakery holding a wide cardboard box. The final layer had been decorated with thin chocolate curls, and a ribbon crossed the lid like a promise. He intended to place the cake on the long wooden table in the square, where neighbors could share slices during the spring fair. A past wind had felt friendly that morning, yet halfway down the street a ferocious gust rushed between buildings. The box tilted; sugar dust burst against his coat. Kai tightened his clutch on the string, knees bending as he steadied the wobbling load. Tiles rattled above before the wind ebbed.
A scruffy terrier darted from an alley, nose twitching at the sweet scent. It circled Kai’s boots, tail wheeling like a propeller, then rose on hind legs. The cake swayed again. Kai shifted sideways, but his elbow bumped a crate of oranges resting beside a stall. Spheres rolled across the cobblestones. One nearly struck the box, yet a market boy leaped forward and trapped it beneath his heel. Kai offered a quick nod; integrity of the dessert remained intact, though cream slid inside the lid. If the fruit had gathered more speed, the icing would have collapsed into a sticky mess.
Near the square, sunlit banners revealed an unexpected sight: the table had vanished. Carpenters were still driving nails, claiming space with sudden hammers. Kai paused; openness stretched across the square, but nowhere flat appeared ready. He scanned the half-finished stalls, then noticed a wheelbarrow resting upright against a fountain. Its plank bed sat level and clean. He balanced the box on that surface, rolled the barrow beside a crowd, and lifted the lid. Steam from sponge layers drifted into fresh air, drawing cheerful murmurs. Despite wind, dog, and construction, the cake remained whole. Sunlight pooled over the unbroken cake.
