Mara stepped onto the noon platform with a small parcel pressed under her arm. A faint hum travelled through the iron roof: vending machines working, wheels rolling, distant brakes hissing. She aimed for the yellow post box beside the station clock; the box swallowed parcels each day before the twelve-thirty collection and she wanted this one inside. Electronic boards clicked in unison overhead, numbers flipping to announce approaching trains. She advanced through a loose stream of travellers, her sneaker soles squeaking against polished tiles. Announcers repeated timings in three languages, their voices rising and falling like short waves. Sunlight filtered through steel lattices, laying long stripes across her path.

Halfway there, a suitcase wheel snagged her ankle. Mara stumbled; the parcel slipped, struck a bench, and came to rest on its narrow edge. The wooden slats quiver, then the package toppled, tearing slightly at one corner. A single sheet slid out to flutter toward the warning line. She lunged, caught the paper, yet the sudden movement pulled the parcel further apart. Voices swelled as commuters sidestepped her crouched shape. Steel beams above began to tremble when an incoming train decelerated, and the gust pushed warm air across her face, scattering wrappers and more papers in spirals.

The crowd thinned again. She stacked the papers, tapping their edges until they aligned, then her fingertips lingered on the torn flap. After a brief pause, she peeled it wider. A clockwork bird rested inside, no larger than her palm, wings folded tight. She turned the tiny key once. Wings snapped open; silver feathers beat in short bursts, the toy hopped, then glided along the bench before settling. The mechanism produced a barely audible whirr, lighter than the station’s deeper rumble. The parcel, once anonymous, now exposed a miniature marvel that gleamed beneath the roof lights.

The second hand on the station clock crept toward thirty. A distant bell echoed from the adjacent concourse, bouncing along the glass roof. People who had paused to watch the fluttering papers drifted back into their lanes; gates clicked, luggage wheels rolled, conversations resumed. Mara closed the parcel carefully, sliding the drawings inside. She stepped to the post box, yet her wrist slowed, and instead she slipped the package into her backpack. A departing whistle cut through the remaining chatter, and the platform shifted as passengers filed into carriages. The brass hands of the station clock rested at twelve.

人潮再度稀疏。她將散落的紙張靠齊，邊緣輕敲桌面，指尖停在裂口處，短暫停頓後，將裂縫撕得更大。裡頭靜躺著一隻掌心大小的發條鳥，雙翼收攏。她旋轉微小的鑰匙一次，銀色羽片倏然展開；翅膀急促拍動，小鳥跳了幾步，沿長椅滑行後停下。機械發出細微的嗡響，與車站厚重的隆隆聲形成對比。這個看似普通的包裹，如今亮出在燈光下閃閃發光的小奇蹟。

站時計的秒針逼近三十秒。隔壁大廳傳來鐘聲，在玻璃屋頂間回盪。剛才駐足觀看紙片飛舞的旅客回到動線；閘門啪然閉合，行李輪滑過，交談聲重新佔據空氣。瑪拉合上包裹，將圖紙放回裡面。她走向郵箱，手腕卻慢了下來，改把包裹塞進背包。列車鳴笛聲劃破餘音，乘客魚貫進入車廂，月台隨之微微晃動。站時計的黃銅指針停在十二點。
