English 원문
Morning fog hung over the village lane when Milo stepped from the bus, a small wooden box balanced against his chest. The parcel weighed little, yet his steps carried purpose: reach the quaint cottage at the edge of the marsh before noon tea cooled. Beyond the low stone wall, geese drifted on a placid pond, their white forms still as folded linen. The lane bent in a gentle curve, disappearing behind elder trees whose early buds glistened. A bakery door creaked; warm spice rolled out and brushed his coat sleeve. He adjusted the box, nodded to a passer-by, and followed the lane until market chatter faded into bird song.
Cobblestones grew slick where last night’s drizzle refused to dry. A trio of lethargic pigeons blocked the narrow arch leading to the footbridge, pecking half-heartedly at crumbs. Milo slowed, shifted left, and the birds fluttered just enough to clear a path. Halfway across the bridge, a bicyclist swerved; spokes clicked close to Milo’s knee, jolting him sideways. The box slipped, spun once in his palm, and tapped the railing before he trapped it against the cool iron. A gasp rose from bystanders; water below rippled in widening rings. Milo exhaled through pursed lips, pressed the lid, and continued, shoes tapping faster until wooden planks gave way to dry gravel.
The lane narrowed again, forming a shaded nook between a disused well and a stack of hay bales. Here, a second figure appeared—Rhea, clutching a parcel wrapped in identical twine. She lifted an eyebrow, said nothing, and fell into step beside him. Their tandem footsteps puffed dust that glittered in thin sunbeams. A distant bell tolled from the village clock tower; each low stroke rolled through hedgerows, pausing both walkers near a water-filled ditch before they advanced together. On the porch ahead, a windchime turned, scattering brief metallic notes across the path. Without agreement, they reached the garden gate together; hinges groaned but did not halt their stride. Milo pushed the gate once, resistance held, so he leaned shoulder against cedar slats; wood creaked, finally yielding.
Inside the garden, daffodils tilted under dew. Rhea unlatched the door; soft light spilled over floorboards. She stepped aside, extended her parcel; Milo mirrored the gesture. Chuckles from an unseen window startled a pair of squirrels into the apple tree, and for an instant the scene settled like a posed photograph. Across the threshold, twin boxes rested side by side on the oak bench.
