Milo balanced his bicycle against a leaning fence beside the silent factory. He had promised himself a clear photograph of a rare spotted duck. The bird often drifted near the wide river behind the broken brick walls, almost an underdog among louder gulls that argued over bread. Sunlight glinted on the water, yet chilly wind pushed little waves toward the stone bank. Milo has carried his small camera on many morning rides, yet a clear picture has always slipped away. Today felt different; reeds rustled, and a sharp quack echoed between metal sheets that once rattled with machines. He crossed a cracked footbridge, keeping his footsteps light so the bird would not dart into the current.

As he reached the last plank, dry leaves snapped behind him. A lean wolf emerged from the yard, its grey fur streaked with dust. The animal sniffed the air but stayed near a pile of pipes, paws shifting on gravel. Milo froze; his knuckles tightened around the camera while wind nudged his elbow, making the viewfinder wobble. The tin can was blown into motion by the gust, rattling across concrete and clanging against metal. The sudden noise startled the wolf, and it bounded away, splashing through shallow water on the far side of the river. The commotion lifted the duck from the reeds, yet the bird settled again on a calmer patch upstream. Milo slid a backpack under the lens for support, held his breath, and pressed the button. One soft click followed another, and ripples widened gently around the floating bird.
