Lily walked to the morning market with an empty basket. She planned to find bright fruit for an outdoor play later. Music mixed with voices around the peach stall. Ripe peaches spread a sweet smell. Her hand reached toward a shiny pear on the front pile. A bump pushed the pear forward. The small accident started a chain that surprised the busy crowd.

Apples rolled, striking a plum basket. Lily moved quickly and blocked the rolling fruit with her basket edge. A cook from the next booth flipped a pancake and dropped his spatula. The metal tool slid across the floor and stopped the last runaway apple. He lifted the spatula and grinned at her. Lily gathered the saved fruit and paid the smiling vendor. The vendor added an extra peach and nodded toward the open square. Sunlight crossed the stage where children arranged props for afternoon play. Lily tucked the basket under her arm and walked toward the square.
