Saturday morning brought Maria to the town square, basket swinging against her hip. A community event had turned the quiet place into a lively outdoor market. Deep drums bumped near the fountain and echoed between stone benches. A long ribbon of singers drifted between rows of tables. Bright heaps of organic produce glowed on linen cloths: red peppers, striped melons, curly lettuces. Maria aimed for the food stall that usually offered her favorite tomatoes. Still, bodies crowded the narrow aisle and slowed her steps. Above, the weather shifted; grey clouds pushed away sunlight and bent yellow flags. She has waited in longer lines before, but today her stomach already rumbled.

A sudden splash drummed on the canvas roof beside her, and rain poured without warning. People squeezed under any cover they found, leaving the aisle even tighter. Maria pivoted, spotting empty crates that had rolled from a nearby cart. She stacked two crates, stepped onto them, and finally reached the stall counter. The vendor, splashed but smiling, handed her shining tomatoes and added a small bundle of herbs. Water kept falling, yet the crates held firm, raising her basket above the wet ground. When the cloudburst eased, steam lifted from the stone square, and she stepped away with dry shoes.
