Milo balanced his camera bag on a damp bench. Breath formed brief clouds inside the old botanical dome. He had spent weeks hearing rumors about a silver–green moth that appeared only at twilight, and tonight he aimed to capture it. The student photography contest would close soon; a clear image might push his work above the rest. The glass panes overhead tinted the last sunlight amber. From the far wall a delicate silhouette quivered against the glow. Its wings curved in an almost organic shape, unlike any insect Milo had seen. He raised his camera and pressed the shutter. No picture appeared on the screen.

The lens had been prepared with special coating, yet moisture still crawled across the glass circle. Milo wiped it, tried again, and the image remained black; consequently, he flicked the switch and groaned. The memory card lay empty—he had forgotten to insert it. If he had checked earlier, he would have avoided the delay. By the time a fresh card clicked into place, the moth seemed to vanish into thin air. Only rustling leaves marked its path. When the dome lights flicked on, the moth lifted away, drifting above the ferns. Cool evening air settled around the still greenhouse.
