English 원문
Milo stepped into the narrow canyon just after noon, limestone walls pressing sound into a muted hush. His satchel bumped against his hip, carrying a small wooden horse wrapped in cloth. Late sunlight skimmed the rim above like a blade, scattering gold flakes onto the dust. He aimed for the western opening where a pedestrian bus stop waited beyond the rocks. A faint whistle rose overhead whenever wind threaded the crooked gap, dropping sand in brief showers. Each echo folded in on itself, setting the pace of his stride; his boots tapped in time across loose gravel. Occasional rivulets from an earlier rain had carved shallow snakes through the dust, forcing him to lengthen or shorten every third step.
A sudden gust funnelled through the corridor, lifting his scarf. Milo braced, but powdered grit still stung his cheeks. He planted one boot on a flat stone; the stone rocked. Ankles tilted, balance wavered, satchel strap slid, the cloth bundle tumbled out, rolled, and lodged beneath a ledge. He crouched, fingers stretching toward it. The gap refused the first reach, knuckles scraping limestone. He exhaled through pursed lips, shifted his shoulder, and tried again. The cloth loosened. As he lifted the bundle, he noticed scratch marks and chalk smudges on the dusty floor, half hidden by wind-blown grains.
Dust cleared for a heartbeat, unveiling a miniature battlefield drawn across the flat rock—zig-zag ridges, dots for archers, cork towers marking a distant castle. A single wooden knight lay toppled near the center, paint chipped, lance missing. Other figures waited upright in rows, forming the outline of a silent kingdom ready for play. Milo lifted the horse toward the light, turning it between thumb and forefinger; the carving carried a noble arch of neck and flared mane. Without speaking, he settled the horse beside the fallen knight, aligning both on the chalk road.
The wind answered with another gust that pressed his coat against his ribs, scattered sand across the improvised battle scene, and then weakened. Grains slid over chalk, dulling colors, yet the two wooden mounts remained standing, their silhouettes joined. Milo tugged the satchel closed, slung it higher on his shoulder, and angled toward the brighter mouth of the canyon. Behind him, echoes shuffled between walls, softer than before. He glanced back once; the chalk map already blurred under the settling layer. Sand rested over the chalk lines in a soft, even layer.
