English 원문
Pine needles carpeted the narrow trail, and Mara’s boots brushed through them in steady rhythm. A weathered walking stick tapped beside each stride, nudging away loose stones that scattered down the slope. Inside her backpack, a well-thumbed study guide pressed against a tin pencil case; the book’s bent corners thumped her ribs whenever the path grew uneven. She aimed for the ridge viewpoint before the hour hand reached noon, imagining clear space for sketching the distant harbor. The air remained mild, yet a pocket of stronger wind met her at the first switchback and lifted her hat immediately, flipping it into a tangle of low shrubs. She retrieved it after a brief scramble, pine scent still clinging to the brim.
Higher ground brought thinner trees and fiercer gusts. The stick slipped on a smooth boulder, jolting her balance; knees bent, she steadied, exhaled, and continued upward. At a wooden footbridge stretched over a shallow ravine, planks groaned under her weight. Halfway across, an unexpected goat stepped from the opposite side, head low, chewing calmly. Bridge space tightened to a single plank’s width. Mara halted; the goat blinked, unhurried. A light tap of her stick against the railing sent a dull thud through the boards, and the animal sidled just enough for passage, swaying the structure. The movement shook her pack open, and the study guide slid out, pages fanning like startled birds. One sheet tore free, drifted beyond reach, and settled on the ravine’s stones below.
She crouched, reclaimed the book, and clipped the strap firmly this time. Beyond the bridge, the trail straightened toward bare rock. Cloud fragments snagged on the ridge, veiling the horizon she had planned to draw. The viewpoint platform appeared soon after—a simple deck of timber, rails silvered by weather. Instead of blue harbor, rolling fog filled every gap, shifting and curling among unseen trees. Mara set her pack down, spine straightening as she accepted the changed scene. A benevolent shaft of sunlight broke through a seam in the cloud, bathing the railing in gentle warmth and revealing delicate spiderwebs latticed between posts, beads of moisture glittering across every strand.
She unfolded her sketchpad, angled it toward the bright lattice, and began tracing arcs where droplets caught the light. Wind calmed, bridge creaks faded behind her, and she worked until graphite darkened her fingertips. Mist softened the railing; droplets clung and shimmered.
