Mark At The Windmill Well - 適合進階的英文短篇故事,含中譯與發音

English 원문
Mark left the gravel road and walked toward a lonely windmill spinning lazily above dry grass. A metal canister tapped against his thigh with every step; he planned to collect a clear sample from the old well below the blades. Thin clouds drifted across an immense sky, and the rush of turning sails rose and fell like breathing. Somewhere under the cracked soil, an underground aquifer pressed cool water toward daylight, and Mark intended to bring a small portion back to the laboratory in town.
A wooden platform circled the stone well. The windmill’s gears clicked overhead, and each rotation helped generate a steady pull on the frayed rope that still ran through the pulley. Mark secured his canister, then eased a bucket downward. The rope slid suddenly, and the bucket knocked the inner wall, sending a spray upward that sparkled in noon light. Empathy settled across the quiet space, as if the well and walker acknowledged each other’s wear from time and weather.
Halfway down, the rope snagged. Mark braced both boots on the platform and tugged twice; nothing moved. A perceptive glance at the sails showed an uneven rhythm—gusts arrived in short bursts, then paused. He waited. Inevitably a stronger breath of wind lifted the tail vane, the gears shifted, and the platform’s pulley twitched. Mark used that moment to jerk the rope free, but the sudden release tipped the bucket, and water sloshed loudly below.
The bucket reached the surface on the next cycle, overflowing with pale, mineral-rich water. The unexpected twist came when sunlight struck the liquid: tiny crystals within the sample refracted green arcs over the stones, turning the well mouth into a brief prism. Wind pushed harder; the sails spun faster, and droplets scattered onto Mark’s sleeves, leaving cool circles that evaporated almost at once.
Mark filled the canister, sealed it, and placed it beside the well. As the wind eased, the sails slowed to a whisper and the pulley chain stopped vibrating. The bucket rested against the stone rim, drops sliding into quiet ripples.
