The night storm left a quilt of debris along the narrow tropical beach. Palm fronds, broken crates, and faintly fragrant fruit bobbed in puddles left by retreating waves. Felix stepped among the splinters, burlap sack in hand. He knelt beside a bent rib from an old skiff, tapping the weathered timber as if greeting it. Good oak was rare in the village, and he hoped to salvage enough for a small carving. Sunlight climbed, turning drops on the wood into glistening beads. Near him, tiny hermit crabs dwelled inside bottle caps that clicked against each other with every small rush of water. Beyond the breakers, fishing boats rocked lazily, their flags hanging like damp laundry.

A second pair of footsteps rustled the sand. Mara approached, her braided hair still damp, a coil of kite string looped around her wrist. She scanned the shoreline and paused at a broad plank half buried near Felix. The timber stood wider than her shoulders and lay across two rocks like an improvised bridge. Felix tested one edge, but the board refused to move; wet sand gripped it, and the barnacled rocks offered no leverage. Mara slid her fingers beneath the opposite side. Their grips misaligned, and the plank rocked only a finger’s width before sinking back, sending a sharp spray over their shoes. Farther off, gulls circled, then swooped, squabbling over a drifting melon.

A stronger wave rolled in, covering their ankles and loosening the sand. Without exchanging words, they tried again, Felix shifting his stance while Mara angled her hip against the weight. The board tipped, then flipped onto its side with a dull slap. Under the sudden burst of light, a yearling turtle blinked, the creature’s shell patterned like hammered copper. It had dwelled beneath the plank throughout the storm, its flippers tucked tight. Released, it paddled against the soaked sand, but a shallow ridge left by the plank trapped the water around it, turning each effort into a slow shuffle.

Felix dragged a split oar across the ridge, scooping a crooked channel toward the sea. Mara kicked aside fruit husks that drifted back with the foam. When the gap met the next wave, water swept forward, and the turtle glided into the current, its shell glistening once more before the surf folded over it. The plank, now freed of its secret, floated for a moment, then settled beside a bruised coconut. Foam washed around the quiet plank while pale sunlight rested on the emptied sand.

沙面傳來第二串腳步聲。瑪拉走近，濕辮仍滴著水，手腕繞著一圈風箏線。她查看海岸，在費利克斯旁停下，目光落在半埋的大木板上。那木板比她肩寬，橫架兩塊礁石，像臨時橋。費利克斯試推一端，卻動不了；濕沙緊咬木板，長滿藤壺的石頭也借不上力。瑪拉把手伸到另一邊。他們握持不齊，木板僅晃動一指寬便沉回去，濺得鞋面水花四散。遠處，海鷗盤旋後俯衝，為一顆漂浮的哈密瓜爭吵。

更強的浪湧上，沒過腳踝，鬆動了沙層。兩人默契再試，費利克斯換了支撐，瑪拉用髖部頂住重量。木板終於翻側，發出沉悶啪聲。瞬間湧入的陽光下，一隻幼龜眨眼，龜殼紋理像錘出的銅片。牠在風暴期間一直窩在板下，鰭肢緊收。脫困後，牠朝濕沙划動，卻被木板留下的淺脊困住，積水讓每次撲動都變得緩慢。

費利克斯把裂槳拖過沙脊，鏟出彎曲水道通向大海。瑪拉踢開隨浪回卷的果皮。水道遇到下一波浪時，海水湧入，幼龜順勢滑入水流，龜殼再度閃亮，隨後被浪花覆蓋。木板失去祕密，漂浮片刻便靠在一顆撞傷的椰子旁。泡沫圍繞靜靜的木板，淡陽光停在空出的沙面上。
