The village fountain looked forgotten, its wide stone basin patched with dry algae and fallen petals. Mateo, a freelance journalist, had arrived before dawn with a camera bag slung across his shoulder. He had been assigned a weekend feature on clean water projects, and he hoped the article would raise awareness of public health without sounding like a lecture. Morning light skimmed the square, revealing cracked tiles around the rim; even pigeons avoided the stale pool. Mateo knelt, adjusted the lens, and pressed the shutter, yet every frame showed nothing but dull, gray residue.
A chill breeze slipped between the houses, carrying the smell of damp bark from stacked firewood nearby. The camera strap snagged on a rusty hook, delaying him again. While he freed it, a sudden bark startled the pigeons, and their beating wings blurred across his next photo. Resistance built silently: leaves clogged the drain, light shifted too quickly, and the fountain’s silence robbed each image of movement. He rolled up his sleeves, set the camera aside, and scooped debris from the basin with bare hands. Cold water seeped through a hidden crack and formed thin mirrors on the stone floor; reflections danced, yet the main subject still felt lifeless.
As Mateo scraped the last layer of slime, curved lines emerged under the grime. If he had known a treasure waited beneath the water, he would have brought better tools. Century-old ceramic pieces formed a faded mosaic of birds circling wheat stalks; bright blues and golds glimmered where sunlight landed. His earlier shots were useless, yet the discovery offered something richer than he had planned. A thin stream had been released by a caretaker nearby, and ripples rolled gently over the picture without hiding it. Mateo climbed the edge, wiped his lens, and captured the new scene before the basin filled again. Evening light rested on the quiet basin.
