Early light skimmed across wooden planks as Miguel carried a palm-sized glass cube toward the quiet lagoon behind the marine outpost. The cube, clear on every side like a miniature aquarium, clinked gently against his belt buckle. At the far end of the pier, brackish water spread in broad silver folds, and a faint hiss drifted from the open sea where steam rose in patches—evidence of an unseen underwater volcano beyond the reef. Miguel knelt at the edge, steadying the cube with both hands. He wanted the first surface layer only, yet a thin swirl of tan powder lifted each time the cube touched water, revealing a mottled sediment layer beneath the green mirror above.

Boards flexed when a sudden gust rolled inland. Miguel pressed his heel down, but the plank dipped. The cube tipped forward, spilled, and rang hollow. He retrieved it, glanced at the spill, and stepped onto a lower shelf where water covered his ankles. Waves folded over his shins; cold sand shifted under his soles. Behind him, the hiss deepened into a groan, and a pale plume appeared against the horizon. He straightened, watching bubbles snap on the surface as if the lagoon copied the distant sea. Then the ground under the shallows shuddered; a narrow column of water burst upward beside his boot, spraying his shorts. The sudden miniature geyser arched, then vanished, leaving a crater no wider than a plate but far clearer than the surrounding tide.

Miguel jerked backward, shoulders high, knees bent. The cube slipped again, bumped wood, and stayed whole. He crouched and lowered it directly into the fresh pool before the sand could tumble back. Water rushed inside, bright and free of silt, allowing tiny drifting grains to glimmer against the glass walls. By the time he sealed the lid, the pool clouded as sand collapsed, erasing the pocket. He rose, beads of water sliding off his calves, and walked up the pier while the original hiss softened to a distant sigh beneath gull cries.

At the top landing, he set the filled cube on a sun-warmed rail; within the aquarium-like chamber, particles drifted, slowed, and settled while ripples dimmed against the mossy posts below.

米格爾猛地後退，肩抬膝曲。立方體再次滑落，撞到木板卻完好無損。他立即蹲下，把它直接放進清澈水坑，趁沙子回落前裝滿。清亮水流湧入，細碎砂粒在玻璃壁內閃爍。當他蓋上瓶蓋，沙子已塌回，抹去那口水穴。他站起來，水珠沿小腿滑落，走回棧道上層；遠處嘶聲化成微弱長嘆，被海鷗叫聲掩過。

抵達高處平台，他把盛滿水的立方體擱在曬暖的欄杆上；在宛如水族箱的透明空間裡，顆粒漂浮、減速，最後沉靜，而下方長滿苔蘚的支柱旁，波紋漸漸暗淡。
