English 원문
Elias unfolded a sketchbook beside the low brick border of the public flowerbed. Purple pansies lined the soil, and a bronze falcon statue perched on a tall iron rod just beyond the petals. His pencil traced the curve of the bird’s wing while the quiet rhythm of late-morning traffic drifted over the hedge.
A soft scrape of tools against earth broke the hush. Mira knelt at the other end of the same bed, sliding bulbs into narrow holes. A faded gardening glove with a stitched wolverine emblem hung from her back pocket, swaying whenever she leaned forward. A magpie landed on the rim of a nearby watering can, tipping its head first toward Elias’s paper, then toward Mira’s trowel. The bird’s quick hop shifted the can; water splashed across the warmed bricks and seeped toward Elias’s open box of charcoal sticks. He shifted the box onto his knee, raising an eyebrow at the uninvited helper. Mira’s shoulders rolled in a silent shrug, then her hands returned to the soil.
The pair continued, each task shaping the shared space. Elias shaded the falcon’s metal feathers; Mira pressed fresh soil around each bulb. The bed began to look almost transformative: dark loam, bright petals, and long silver lines of afternoon light weaving everything together. Without warning, a hidden mechanism clicked under the grass. One sprinkler head rotated, but instead of its usual slow circle, the arm jammed after half a turn. Water burst sideways, striking the falcon statue, ricocheting off the bronze, and arcing directly toward the freshly planted section as well as Elias’s knees.
Elias jumped back, charcoal box clutched under one elbow, yet a streak of gray still marked the soaked corner of his newest page. Mira ducked, stretching both arms across the flowerbed as if her body could shield the tender bulbs. The magpie flapped upward, leaving a shower of droplets behind. Elias spotted the obstruction: a loose pebble wedged between metal teeth. He crouched, flicked the stone free with his pencil, and the sprinkler arm settled into its usual rhythm—now sweeping a gentler mist across the lawn instead of a single hard jet.
Mira dabbed the puddle around the bulbs with the wolverine glove, then turned the glove inside out to reveal a dry side. She pressed fresh soil over the displaced water, while Elias tore the damp edge from his page and continued sketching the shifting reflections on wet bronze. Drops clung to the silent falcon statue while the sprinkler arm rested at an awkward angle.
