Mia balanced on a wobbling stool, studying the wide roll of fabric that lay at her feet. The neighborhood fair opened in an hour, and the banner still needed a place above the entrance. A low rustle rose from the children rehearsing music on the far bleachers, a small system of sound already in motion. Ruben arrived carrying lengths of wire; he steadied the stool with one boot and slipped the first hook into the ceiling track. Their local goal stood clear: lift the painted cloth high before the crowd drifted inside.

The rolled banner weighed more than expected; each layer of acrylic had grown mature overnight, stiffening the weave. Mia pressed both palms under the cylinder while Ruben tipped the opposite end upward. The stool rocked. A sudden draft swept through the door left ajar, making loose papers twist along the floor. As the wire tightened, the banner refused to rise; its edge snagged against a bent screw. The draft continued to escalate, flipping cardboard pallets, brushing jars off a shelf. Raised voices from rehearsing children merged with the clatter, and a ripple of near–chaos spilled through the hall.

Ruben leaned back, releasing the tension. At that exact second, the draft surged again. The banner slipped from their grip, uncoiling in mid-air. Fabric unfurls above them, a slow wave; hidden pigments caught the light before anyone could blink. From the centre emerged a peacock painted in fierce emerald and sapphire, tail eyes scattered across the width of cloth. Powdered pigment, never fully fixed, burst outward and drifted everywhere, sprinkling benches, trumpets, even Ruben’s hair. Children on the bleachers froze, their instruments half-raised, as color flecks floated past faces like confetti.

The banner, now fully spread, drifted downward until its bottom hem kissed the gym floor. The once-secret bird stared outward, feathers frozen in triumphant display. Without a spoken plan, Mia and Ruben caught the lower corners and carried the cloth to the side wall; the draft now subsided, leaving motes spinning slowly in the quiet. The unexpected display needed no higher perch; the hall already brimmed with the sight. Fine turquoise dust settled over the empty ladder.
