English 원문
Shelves rose like quiet walls around the mezzanine of the city library, and a rolling ladder rattled as Felix steered it along the rail. His fingertips skimmed spines until they reached a tall atlas balanced far above eye level. A second hand arrived from the opposite side of the ladder; Mira, carrying a narrow stack of journals, tilted her head so strands of hair brushed the rail. For a fleeting moment, neither withdrew. Felix shifted first, trying to juggle politeness and balance while easing the heavy volume downward with one palm. The atlas slid, overbalanced, and thudded against Mira’s journals. Pages fanned outward; two journals slipped, slapped the carpet, and spun beneath a reading lamp.
Mira crouched to gather the scattered sheets just as the skylight creaked. A sparrow zipped through the opening, executed a swift swoop above their heads, and flurried dust from the ceiling beams. The bird’s wings clipped the hanging chain of a brass globe, setting it in gentle rotation. Felix ducked, the atlas wedged under his elbow; Mira’s journals tilted again, and she juggled them into a tighter grip. The sparrow banked near the history shelves, searched for footing, and finally chose the edge of the rolling ladder as a perch. Its claws clicked against metal while the faint rustle of turning pages drifted from readers below, each face angling upward toward the commotion.
Felix tapped the rung beside the bird, coaxing it to launch. Instead, the ladder wheels twitched, snagged on a gap between floorboards, and refused to glide. Mira set her pile on the nearest table, unlatched the skylight hook with a stretch, and swung the pane wider. The fresh draft lifted loose atlas pages, sending them fluttering like soft kites. Startled, the sparrow sprang from the ladder, coasted along a column of light, and vanished through the open frame. Feathered silence returned almost at once; the globe slowed; the ladder wheels stilled. The atlas rested flat on the table beside a single loose feather.
