Dust hazed the late-morning light as Mira unlocked the narrow door of the university’s oldest physics wing. Inside, one forgotten classroom waited behind stacked stools and rolled maps. Yellowed strips of tape held a poster that once tracked participation for a long-finished term, each column filled with neat ink stars. The chalkboard under it carried only faint equations about the ozone layer, the writing pressed so deep that the grooves still caught the glare. At the back, a metal cabinet guarded a tower computer whose plastic had turned the color of weak tea.
She dragged the machine onto a desk, brushed grit from the vents, and pressed the square power switch. A fan clattered; a green cursor blinked. Her fingers tapped keys in short bursts until the word “program” blinked across the monochrome screen. A reel-to-reel reader beside the tower whined, refusing to grip its tape; the belt slipped once, twice. Mira lifted the lid, slid the tape forward one tooth, and the reels finally turned. Lines of numbers scrolled downward: measured sunlight, atmospheric pressure, upper-air chemicals. Without pausing, she printed a graph; the dot-matrix head rattled, leaving a fresh band of perforated paper on the floor.
She bent over the jagged curve, trying to judge whether the sudden dip near the final date marked sensor failure or a real thinning of the ozone layer above the station. Before she finished tracing the ink, the overhead fixture flickered. A surge rippled through dusty wiring; an old slide projector on a side shelf coughed alive and cast a washed image onto the wall—children in lab coats raising glass tubes, the photograph dated in one corner. The reel inside the projector ticked forward and snapped; the image froze, its edges curling with heat.
Mira unplugged the projector, folded the long printout, and slipped it between notebook pages. Behind her, the computer’s fan slowed, starved by age and clogged lint; the cursor faded until only the blank screen reflected her outline. She left the tower cooling beside scattered punch cards, closed the door, and stepped back into the corridor. Graph paper rested inside her open notebook on the scarred bench.
