Morning light angled across the yard behind the old barn. Laurel lifted an empty clay pitcher near the door. She aimed to fill it before the small harvest occasion began. Warm hay scent mixed with cool iron drifted through the open door. A stack of leaflets rested on a barrel beside the pump, ready for an evening presentation. The pump, which stood beside the barn, had been stiff all week.

Laurel pressed the handle; rusty metal fought back with slow jerks and sharp squeaks. After three heavy pushes, a burst of water shot out and soaked her sleeve. She has filled buckets here before, yet today the flow arrived too wildly. While she waited for the pitcher to fill, a sudden gust entered the barn. Straw lifted, and a loose pitchfork scraped downward, landing across the doorway. For a moment, the doorway was blocked by the fallen tool. A corner of the leaflet pile fluttered; pages began to gather around her boots.

Balancing the brimming pitcher, she nudged the pitchfork with a steady foot. Metal tines caught in straw, so the tool resisted and rolled back. She placed the pitcher on the barrel that had supported the leaflets. With both hands free, she lifted the handle, turned it, and cleared the gap. During the struggle, several pages escaped and skated across the wet floorboards. She gathered them quickly; ink blots spread, yet words remained legible for the later talk. Barrel wood creaked, but the pitcher stayed upright, light reflecting on its calm surface. Laurel stepped into the yard, water cooling her fingers as distant footsteps approached.
