The cabinet door had been painted shut long ago.

Last week's science lesson about levers had stayed inside her mind. She slid a thin plank under the bucket to spread its weight. Mara climbed again and pulled; dried paint groaned, then cracked sharply. That breakthrough jolted the cabinet, and a cardboard box tumbled forward. It burst open, scattering bright marbles across the concrete floor. The cat sprang upright, batting a marble toward the open door. While gathering the beads, Mara uncovered notebooks filled with sketches. Unexpected knowledge waited among the fragile pages, pressed flat by time. The cat settled beside the pile as sunlight touched the notebooks.
