Soft evening light touched the wide field. Eli held small binoculars and stepped into the open grass. He raised the lenses toward a tall distant pine. Binocular straps brushed his jacket as he walked. A moderate breeze bent the tall flowers beside his boots. Beneath the breeze, insects hummed across the quiet wilderness. He lifted the lenses and searched the dark branches ahead. A low branch hooked the strap and tugged the binoculars down. They slipped, hit a rock, and rolled into a hidden hollow.

Eli knelt, fingers sweeping through dry leaves and smooth stones. A faint green glow flickered from inside the hollow. He pulled a curious flat bottle that trapped three fireflies. The tiny lights moved behind the glass and lit his hands. His knees pressed deeper into the earth as he leaned. The mountain bird burst from the pine and glided overhead. Wings brushed air; loose needles rained across the bottle. Leaves shifted, covering the hollow and the rolling lenses. Eli scooped the binoculars and set the bottle upright. Fireflies floated free through the sudden opening of the lid. The green glow drifted above the grass before fading. Eli wiped dirt from his sleeves and walked toward home.
