Maya rolled an empty wheelbarrow across the community garden after school. She wanted bright vegetables for the soup cooling at home. Cool rain smell mixed with fresh soil drifted between raised beds. Water tapped lightly on broad pumpkin leaves. Weekend visits from city volunteers have built a tall compost stack near the fence, and narrow pipes, part of a quiet water conservation system, ran beside it. Dark clouds gathered during her walk, and a breeze slid under her hat. She quickened her steps, thinking any extra effort could prove worthwhile if the tomatoes stayed firm and dry.

First drops turned the path into sticky clay. The wheel sank, its front rim half-buried. While pulling, she slipped sideways and her knee pressed against a loose plank that had been left beside the path. She wedged the plank beneath the rim, yet the wheel would not rise. As she shifted the wood again, something small and metallic glimmered. A brass key, dull but solid, lay stuck in the mud. She lifted it, wiped it on her sleeve, then slid the plank farther. The wheel bumped onto wood, rolled free, and bumped toward the shelter. Tomato baskets rocked inside, but nothing spilled. Rain slowed to a thick mist, and the key rested in her pocket while water dripped steadily from the wheel.
