English 원문
Clouds drifted low across the open moorland, letting threads of light stripe the ground. Clara balanced a wooden survey pole on her shoulder while Milo carried a plank meant for the new footpath. Their task appeared simple: find firm points across the wet hollow and mark them. Yet the puddled surface ahead reflected sky like a sheet of tin, and reeds waved over hidden mud. The old chart noted the bog’s average depth at forty centimeters; Clara took that figure with a grain of salt and kept the yellow pole extended in front of her. Milo adjusted his grip so the plank’s tail cleared tufts of heather.
At the water’s edge, she pressed the pole downward. Resistance vanished sooner than expected; the pole slid until her glove met the waterline, proving the hollow deeper than the chart suggested. Milo tested the rough terrain with the plank, easing one end onto a patch that appeared solid. The board tipped, and his boot vanished halfway into cold mire. He jerked back, sending droplets across their surroundings. Peat’s earthy smell drifted out, thick and sour. He steadied the plank again, this time laying it flatter so both of them could step onto it. The surface quivered but held, forming a narrow island of wood.
Halfway across, a sudden gurgle escaped beneath the board. Air and water coursed upward, lifting the plank, and Clara slipped sideways. Her knee struck a tussock, splashing dark water over her coat. As she pushed up, something glossy rolled from the mud, caught against the pole, and bobbed beside her boot: a ceramic jug, its neck chipped, its body coated in black silt. Milo knelt, palms spread for balance, and guided the jug onto the plank. Water drummed softly inside the hollow vessel, hinting at nothing else within. The surprise left both of them motionless for a breath before the plank steadied again.
Wind coursed over the hollow, flattening the reeds and sending faint rings across the exposed pool. Milo set the jug upright near the far end of the plank while Clara tapped mud from her sleeve. Their markings for the path could wait; the day had unfolded differently than planned, and the sky already brushed orange over distant hills. They stepped back toward firmer ground, boards creaking behind them. Pale sunlight rested on the jug, and ripples spread around its curved base.
