The picnic blanket lay under low branches. Soft air carried new grass scent. A lazy afternoon drifted over the small park, and two friends, Ethan and Zoe, shared the shade. Ethan had brought a camera with a wide strap; his goal stood on the blanket: a glass jar that held a single firefly found near the reeds. The glass had been washed the night before, so no dust marked its surface. He wanted a clear picture before light faded. Zoe, sitting cross-legged, lifted a long wool scarf she had worn in the morning chill. As she leaned forward to pour chamomile tea from a small metal flask, the scarf slipped, looped around Ethan’s elbow, and pulled his arm sideways just as he focused the lens.

Ethan paused, tried to unwind the fabric without shaking the jar. At the same moment, a quick gust rolled across the grass and tipped the cup. Pale tea streamed toward the jar’s base, soaking the blanket and lifting steam into the cooling air. The movement unsettled the lid, which had been resting loosely; it toppled, and the firefly drifted out, hovering above the shining puddle. The tiny insect settled on the wet cloth, its green light flashing against the golden tea. Surprise widened Zoe’s eyes; Ethan’s thumb hit the shutter almost by reflex.
