Maya stands in the yard. The sun is warm. A kite hangs on a tree. Maya reaches for the kite. She steps near the trunk. She starts to climb the tree. Her foot slips on loose sand. Roots stay under the sand. The branch stays high. She stops climbing now.

Maya looks down now. Soft sand covers the firm earth. She pushes the sand aside with one shoe. Dark earth shows under it. She sets her foot on the firm earth. She climbs up again. Her hands grip the branch. The kite touches her hair. She lifts it free. Maya sits on the branch. She can watch the yard from above. Air is quiet now.
