Morning light filled the narrow stream.

Cold water ran over round stones and carried leaves downstream. A young beaver dragged a basic stick toward a low bank. A half-built dam formed flat stairs across the water. Loose bark floated beside him and brushed his whiskers. The small builder pressed each branch with quick paws and strong teeth. The stream pushed back with constant force and shook loose thin twigs.

New sunshine bounced on a smooth mood stone below the surface. The flash startled the beaver; his tail slapped, and water leaped out. The splash knocked the basic stick away and rolled two small rocks. One rock slid into a gap and locked the lower branch. The dam stopped shaking, and water calmed behind the fresh wall. The beaver circled once, gathered the drifting stick, and wedged it tightly. Ripples spread, then faded under a cloud shadow. The beaver sniffed the air, nudged the stuck stick, and swam off.

아침 햇살이 좁은 개울을 가득 채웠다.

차가운 물은 둥근 돌 위를 흘러 나뭇잎을 아래쪽으로 데려갔다. 어린 비버 한 마리가 기본 나뭇가지를 낮은 둑 쪽으로 끌었다. 반쯤 쌓인 둑은 물 위에 납작한 층처럼 놓여 있었다. 헐거운 나무 껍질이 비버 옆을 떠다니며 수염을 스쳤다. 작은 ‘건축가’인 비버는 빠른 앞발과 강한 이빨로 가지를 눌렀다. 개울물은 일정한 힘으로 밀어치며 얇은 잔가지를 흔들었다.

새로운 햇빛이 물 아래 매끈한 무드 스톤에 반사되었다. 번쩍임에 놀란 비버는 꼬리를 내리쳤고 물이 튀어 올랐다. 물보라는 기본 나뭇가지를 밀어내며 작은 돌 두 개를 굴렸다. 돌 하나가 틈으로 미끄러져 들어가 아랫가지에 고정되었다. 둑은 더 이상 흔들리지 않았고 담긴 물이 잔잔해졌다. 비버는 한 바퀴 돌며 떠가는 가지를 모아 단단히 끼웠다. 물결이 퍼지다 구름 그림자 아래에서 사라졌다. 비버는 냄새를 맡고, 고정된 가지를 밀어본 뒤 헤엄쳐 떠났다.
