Kite Escapes the Branches- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

Leo tightened the bright string around his wrist and scanned the open basketball court at the centre of the park. White paint formed a clean grid across the concrete, and the straight lines promised a good guide. He had built the lightweight kite from thin bamboo and paper last night. He had come to practise smooth launches before the school fair. Warm air smelled of fresh cut grass, while a distant mower droned behind the trees. Sunlight glinted on a nearby railing, and warmth pressed gently against his forearms. His first throw looked efficient: the frame rose quickly, but a sudden cross-wind twisted the tail. The kite veered, brushed a branch, then slapped down onto the dusty square closest to the fence.

Leaves still rustled overhead when Leo knelt to review his plan. He has tested three different designs during the summer, yet this paper frame remains the lightest. The loose tail had been blamed in earlier flights. Yet the uneven wind clearly played a larger part today. He shortened the string, then stepped back and changed strategy. He would use the painted grid like stepping stones. Moving diagonally, he reached the widest corner before lifting the frame. Two careful strides carried him between faded numbers. The concrete released small puffs of chalky dust that drifted beyond the fence. At the far corner the breeze straightened his hair, so he threw once more. The kite leapt above the trees, steadied itself, and hung there, bright against the blue.
