English 원문
Thin morning light slipped between low clouds and spread across the black slope. The cooled side of the small volcano looked like a cracked loaf, steam rising from narrow seams. Gravel whispered under Nora’s boots while Tig, a speckled mountain dog, nosed patches of spicy-smelling moss. Warm air met colder gusts and formed shifting ribbons that brushed their faces. By the path, charred stumps marked earlier eruptions; pale lichens clung to them. The valley below stretched wide; its mosaic of amber grass and dark boulders shaped a wild landscape. Nora carried a metal box and a short shovel, aiming to collect fresh ash for the laboratory.
The first ridge crumbled under each step, forcing her to kneel and spread her weight. Tig circled, ears pricked. Nora had studied notes prepared by a visiting scientist who had measured gas vents here, yet the surface still surprised her. Periodically a hiss burst through the crust, leaving the air tasting of minerals. She tried a direct climb, but loose cinders rolled away, dragging her shovel with them. She switched tactics, angling toward a cluster of harder lava plates. Even those plates tilted without warning, so she drove the shovel’s blade into the soil and used it as a lever. Progress was slow and gradual, yet the rim edged nearer.
Near the top, a sudden puff of steam clouded her goggles and startled Tig; the dog leaped sideways and landed on a brittle overhang. The ledge fractured and spilled a veil of ash, then revealed a small glass vial lodged inside the crust. Nora steadied herself, dragged the shard loose, and brushed grit away. The vial held grey powder identical to what she sought, its stopper thick with wax. Someone else had reached the spot earlier and left this silent trace. She slipped the find into her pocket, pressed a palm against Tig’s shoulder, and began the cautious descent. Sulfur haze hung above the quiet stones.
