Leo dropped a fabric bag onto the morning beach, ready for the organized cleanup. Salty spray brushed his cheeks, and gull cries rolled across the bright water. Warm sun painted thin stripes on the wet wooden pier nearby. Beside him, Miri pointed at a thick fishing net half buried under damp sand. The net formed a hard knot around an enormous spiral shell that shone like polished bone. They wanted to free the shell before the tide pulled everything away. Yet two invisible forces argued around their ankles. Wet sand gripped the net downward, while rising water tugged it seaward.

Leo braced both feet and hauled backward; the net scarcely shifted against the stubborn sand. A small wave slapped his knees, adding sudden weight that almost twisted him around. Miri changed position and drove her shovel under the net. She worked during the brief pause between waves. Together they lifted in rhythm, timing each pull with water that now slid away instead of crashing forward. The sand loosened; the net came free and flipped over, scattering driftwood and colored beads hidden beneath. A pale crab was lifted with the debris, then it hurried sideways into a foamy pool. They have already filled one bag, yet the bright beads rolled like marbles and caught their attention. They placed the beads on a flat plank. Simple patterns grew between bottle caps and rope. Two sets of sandy fingerprints stayed across the plank, one on each side. Waves continued to hiss beyond the uneven row of footprints.
