Opal lifted a heavy pot from the stove and set it beside the sink. Garlic hissed in the pan behind her, so she tilted her spoon to keep it moving. She worked as tonight's host, aiming for a simple dinner that warmed the early spring air. Comfort from the slow flame rolled across the small kitchen, meeting the crisp night drifting through an open window. Outside, a starry patch of sky peeked between rooflines, and faint silver light slipped across the counter. Steam rose and caught that glow, turning every droplet into quick sparks. She added chopped carrots, then reached for soft dough that waited under a towel. The routine moved on; her hands followed a rhythm learned over many evenings.

A sudden gust swung the window wider, rattling pans that hung above the stove. The draft pushed a jar of pepper forward; black grains tumbled across the dough and marked it with a starry scatter. The spoon slipped from her fingers, tapped the rim of the pot, and threatened to dive inside. Opal shifted one foot, braced her hip against the counter, and caught the spoon before it disappeared. She slid the pot farther from the edge, folded the dough once more, and brushed the pepper aside. Garlic kept sizzling, and heat continued to spread its quiet comfort.
