Cold dust rubbed softly across Sage's palms today. She lifted a flat box from the corner of the refurbished gym. The cardboard edge scraped lightly, and fine grains slid through her fingers. Felix kneeled beside her and tilted the lid. Inside lay dozens of ceramic squares left after the recent renovation. A row of energy-efficient lamps hummed overhead and brightened the glossy pieces. Nothing in the room needed repair; wide floorboards simply waited. Sage placed one blue square near her knee. Felix copied the motion with a green square at a sharper angle. The small change produced a jagged line between colors, and both paused.

Sorting the mixed shades proved time-consuming, so they slid tiles straight from the box. Each repetition widened the patch yet never kept the same rhythm. Sage tapped pale pieces into loose soft arcs. Felix slipped thin brown slivers between them and shifted the pattern. A loose board bent and made a few tiles slide, so they moved onto firmer ground. Midway through, Sage lifted a square that held tiny glass specks. The specks caught the lamp light and flashed with a special shimmer. Felix pressed it at the center, and surrounding colors brightened quietly. Near the wall, stacks of metal hinges waited for other upgrades and projects. Their improvised mosaic spread eight rows wide beneath the humming lamps. Two dusty palmprints marked the final tile, one from Sage and one from Felix. Air from the vent teased a loose ribbon of tape beside the pattern.
