Crumbs Beyond the Spray- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

A wooden picnic table stood four tail-lengths beyond a narrow pond. A low bench ran parallel to the table, leaving just a paw-wide gap to the water.

Left from an afternoon celebration, bright cups lay scattered, and a half-eaten birthday cake waited on the table. A sparrow hopped among crumbs, then fluttered clear when the first lawn sprinkler began its slow arc. Water hissed and darkened a band of grass, creeping toward the pond. A young raccoon crawled from under the bench, nose twitching toward the sweet scent. Between him and the cake stretched two routes: a thin beam over the pond, quick but tricky, or a curving flagstone path around the edge, longer and already damp. Warm evening light touched the pond, and distant traffic hummed behind the hedges.

The sprinkler’s spray reached the first flagstone. The raccoon placed both forepaws on the beam and inched forward, tail lifted for balance. Halfway across, the next sprinkler clicked on; water struck his back and startled him sideways. One hind paw slipped, splashing into the pond, yet the beam held. A small cardboard shard floated up beside the beam—a brightly painted puzzle piece turning in the ripples. The raccoon sniffed it, then pushed on until his claws gripped the far bench. He sprang to the table just as water splattered against the legs. The sparrow circled once above him, then vanished into a cedar. With a quick swipe, the raccoon pulled a sticky crumb free, pressed the morsel between his paws, and swallowed it.

灑水器的水帶已達到第一塊石板。浣熊將前爪搭上木梁，一點點前移，尾巴高舉以維持平衡。走到一半，下一只灑水器又開啟；水花擊在牠背上，驚得牠側滑。一隻後爪落入池中濺起水花，但木梁並未晃動。一片色彩鮮艷的紙板隨漣漪浮上——那是一塊拼圖碎片。浣熊嗅了嗅，繼續前行，直到爪尖抓住對岸的板凳。牠躍上桌面，水花剛好打在桌腳。麻雀在上方盤旋一下，便消失在側邊的雪松中。浣熊迅速刮下一小塊黏甜蛋糕屑，雙爪夾緊那顆碎粒，然後吞入口中。
