English 원문
Emerald glare from a signal lamp flickered across the wet planks of the pier. Pearl and Max pushed another wooden crate along a low plank toward the fishing boat. The crate scraped, then stopped against a bollard while anchor chain links clinked under the hull nearby. Numbers painted on the side did not make sense. Some boxes displayed twelve beside three, yet the pair kept stacking them in the same corner. Pearl previously checked each rope handle for splinters. Her palms moved quickly now, sliding the load nearer the gangplank.
Farther along, a seagull flapped over open water. Wingbeats joined a thick tar smell rising from a half-submerged barrel. A deep hum rolled out from a tug turning near the breakwater. Small waves slapped the pier and shifted its rhythm. Momentum carried the forgotten barrel toward the workers. It accelerated across the planks, struck the crate corner, and bounced in a remarkable arc. The sudden collision shook Max completely off balance. A brief laugh burst from his throat before he planted one boot against the moving barrel. At the same instant, Pearl tightened her grip, twisting her shoulders to hold the crate upright. Wood edges bit into her gloves, yet the stack stopped swaying. They continued lifting, matching each other’s pace while anchor chain links still rattled under the boards.
Within minutes the boxes reached the final row beside the mast. Pearl nudged the last crate against the railing, and Max guided a rope through its handle. He tugged the line toward a cleat, feeling friction build and release as the fiber slid over metal. The minor wave that caused the chaos already faded, yet salty droplets still rolled along the deck. The event left no mark except a dent on the barrel. The pair showed no hurry to discuss it. Max pulled the remaining slack on the rope tight. He looped the rope twice around the cleat.
