A low hum rolled around the lantern housing as wind pressed against the glass panes. Luna paused on a stone step beside the spiral staircase. She listened to rubber seals hidden in the railing strain. She lifted a narrow ring from a dusty rope coil. The ring once hugged the big lens, but now felt loose and springy. When she pulled the ring outward, its sides stretched, thinned, and then rebounded against her palm. The movement flexed like a tiny living thing, and the bounce made her grin. Inside this metal environment, every surface held motion. Brass fittings creaked, a weather vane tapped above, and the foghorn throbbed below. Near her boot, green moss circled a damp bolt, forming a soft ecosystem in the corner.

Luna began to play. She hooked the ring between two brass studs on the window ledge. She pressed the middle until it formed a tight oval. The rubber kept its shape for a breath, then sprang upward with a quiet twang. Curious, she tried again at a steeper angle. This time the ring bounced away and rolled along the iron door.

A tight knot of old twine blocked its path and became a small obstacle. She chose another ring with thicker walls. She remembered the label on the oil can nearby said the liquid was harmful to rubber. She wiped her fingers on her sleeve before squeezing the new ring. The thicker band compressed, bulged, and finally shot free. It sailed through sunbeams and drifted like a jellyfish. It landed on the great lens and scattered wavy colors across the room. Outside, wind tugged at a forgotten signal flag tied to the railing. Spray leapt against the glass pane and streaked the fresh rainbow shapes.
