English 원문
Every morning Seth lifted the warped shutter to let gray light into the pulp room, yet today a heron skittered across the damp floorboards. Not once did the bird flap its wings; it only watched the slow swirl inside the vats as though the mill were an odd, indoor estuary.
Seth bent to slide a stained press frame from yesterday’s stack. His palms still wet, he glanced at Mae arranging wire screens along a beam so old that flakes of ocher varnish clung to her sleeves. The heron hopped onto a drying rack, and its weight bowed the cedar bar; several half-formed sheets sagged, their surfaces marbled with residue that spoke of long use. When Seth tapped the rack to shoo the visitor, the corner post shifted, loosening a hose. A ribbon of water began to seep across the floor, lifting pulp scraps that clung like feather-thin petals. What seemed a simple nudge had worsened the room’s fragile balance.
Mae crouched, coaxing the hose back toward its hook, while Seth traced the bird’s narrow leg. A glint emerged where damp light met metal: a hook embedded in old fishing line wound round the scaly ankle. What Mae noticed first was the imprint of tiny barbs against gray skin; only then did Seth register the brittle twine trailing behind, stained the same chalky hue as the vats. The heron was less wanderer than castaway, an unintended by-catch from a lone fisherman who worked the broad, brackish inlet beyond the yard. If the vat were any fuller, the escaped water would already cover their boots, yet neither moved the heron aside. The mill’s slow thud matched the quiet tension gathering between them.
Outside, a benevolent breeze slid under the lifted shutter, carrying the mixed scent of salt and wet cellulose, reminders of the biodiversity thriving just beyond the sluice gates. The building itself owed its survival to sustainable pine beams now mottled with lichen. Seth reached for the rope that raised the wide sash, pausing when the bird tilted its head, line still tight, pulp still spreading. Wind might coax the heron toward the open sky, yet freeing the hook could keep it calm enough to spare the drying sheets. He balanced between those options, thumb rubbing resin from the frayed hemp as droplets continued to gather at his heels.
Seth closed his hand around the rope above the open window.
